Federal Grant Aims To Improve Safety On Nebraska Reservation

A Native American tribe in Nebraska has been awarded more than $1 million in a grant from the Department of Justice to enhance public safety on reservations.

The U.S. Attorney's office for Nebraska announced Friday that the Omaha Tribe will receive more than $1.2 million to focus on alcohol and substance abuse, comprehensive victim assistance and tribal youth programs.

The Department of Justice is awarding more than 200 grants to more than 110 American Indian and Alaska Native nations for public safety.

Nebraska's U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg said in a news release that the grant "will assist in in putting an end to the devastating crime problems that plague Indian country."
