Traffic investigators say Officer Jeff Kilgore was southbound on 16th Street when the delivery truck that was eastbound on Leavenworth ran the red light.
The FedEx truck rolled on its side. The front of the cruiser had considerable damage.
Kilgore, who has been with OPD for 8 years, was taken to Nebraska Medical Center with burns to his wrists from the airbags going off.
The FedEx driver, Andrew Hamer, 23, was not injured.
It's standard procedure not to issue tickets when a police officer is involved in a crash. The city prosecutor will review the case.
Initially, police reported that the officer was responding to a call of a reported carjacking on 15th Street.
