A tragic fire in Council Bluffs over the weekend claimed the life of an infant and sent three others to the hospital in critical condition.
Jerrel Lerette, the father of the infant, was overcome with grief losing six-month-old Mayci Jane.
He returned to the home to pick up the pieces and what remained. He had just taken his son to prom.
Lerette said, "I just couldn't believe it. Just like, this better be a joke, this better be a joke. And when I got here it wasn't and it was too late. I just wish I could have taken my baby with me everywhere I went."
Inside at the time of the fire with Mayci were Lerette's brother Jeremiah, three-year-old son and mother Terese.
The Council Bluffs Fire Department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
