A Heartland homicide has sent a family into a tailspin. The death of Darryel Fields took a son, uncle and father from them over the weekend. Douglas County prosecutors are charging his longtime girlfriend with his death.

“He's not going to one of his son’s football games; basketball games," said Andrea Dale, Fields' cousin. "He's not going to go to his daughter's cheerleading. He's not going to walk his oldest daughter down the aisle.”

A memorial sits alongside Dale as she talks about her cousin. Their family is still in shock about his death.

“When you think of people passing, you want it to be because of health situations, or because God said it was time for us to go home, not because someone decided to take that person away,” said Dale.

Colleen Cannon

Colleen Cannon, Fields’ girlfriend of nearly two decades, is facing charges. She is the mother of Darryel’s three children. Cannon is being held without bond. She could be looking at 20 to life in prison if convicted. She's back in court May 9th.

Darryel’s family wants justice for the man they loved so much. They showed us his Bachelor's and Master’s degrees.

Andrea said, “He actually beat me getting his Master’s Degree, so it kind of pushed me to go, to say, ‘Oh, it’s time for me to go back,’ you know. If he did it, I need to too.”

But Fields faced challenges before grad school.

His cousin told us, “I remember him coming home and he didn't have his arm.” It was removed when he underwent treatment for cancer.

Fields' family remains close as they struggle to come to grips with what happened to him.

Andrea said, “I'm waiting for someone to call and say this was all just a big joke. It didn't really happen. He's still here. He's still with us. And I keep waiting for that call and it didn't come.”

A fund has been set-up at all SAC Federal Credit Union locations to help raise money for funeral arrangements. Donations can be made to the Darryel L. Fields Memorial Fund.
