"I love that this keeps their memories alive," Suzie Bock said.
Jay Bock, Steve Benscoter, Dale Aspedon and Dennis Chaney were on their way home from the motorcycle rally in Sturgis last August when their lives were cut short. All four were killed when an intoxicated Andrew Schlichtemeier ran into them.
Bock's sister and Chaney's cousin, Suzie Bock, says a year later, it isn't any easier.
"A lot of ups and downs with everything. Nothing is linear or smooth in this," she said. "And having such a huge hole in our family with my brother and my cousin both being lost has really been difficult."
But what is helping is seeing all the people who cared about the Fallen Four. A fundraiser was held at Mojo Smokehouse and Ales.
Three of the four riders were Western Iowa American Legion Riders, while Bock was named an honorary member. And Keith Callaway says he was supposed to ride with the four that day.
"Just the thought that within a matter of a few seconds, everything changed," Callaway said. "From now on, everything's changed."
The riders have started raising $200,000 to build a memorial for the four men at the Mid-American Motorplex. It will be a place where police and other local organizations can hold safety training classes and provide education on drunk driving awareness.
"We know that nothing will ever bring them back, but if we can build this memorial and have it in such a way to keep not only their memories alive but hopefully prevent a lot of this from happening in the future, that will help us a lot," Callaway said.
Bock said that if the Fallen Four were still here, they'd be front and center to help with the memorial.
"The first four people who would be out there with a hammer and nails that you wouldn't be able to drag away are these particular four guys," she said.
The man convicted of killing the four, Andrew Schlictemeier, was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
If you'd like to donate to help build the Fallen Four Memorial, a fund has been set up at Glenwood State Bank. Donations can be made to:

Callaway also said that donors can call him for more information at 712-527-2155. And the riders will have a new website up soon with more information at www.westerniowaalr.org.
