If you drive by Oakview Mall Wednesday night and see lights and federal agents, don't be alarmed. It's just a drill.

The Omaha Field Office of the FBI will host a training exercise to simulate a complex incident in a public venue. The exercise will begin late Wednesday evening, after the mall closes, and conclude prior to normal business hours on Thursday, May 1, 2014 for mall tenants and patrons.

The FBI, in partnership with federal, state, and local law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, and the private sector, is conducting exercises at local malls across the country as the final phase of the Complex Mall Attack Initiative, which was developed to promote preparedness.

In 2013, all FBI field offices hosted formal discussions with public safety and private sector partners that focused on preparedness, response, and recovery efforts necessary to effectively address a complex attack. The FBI is committed to strengthening public safety and private sector partnerships necessary to protect the United States and its citizens.

“This training exercise allows us to strengthen and reinforce the coordination required among law enforcement, first responders and private sector partners. In this manner, together we can effectively and efficiently address a complex critical incident,” said Thomas R. Metz, Special Agent in Charge of the Omaha Office of the FBI.

The FBI has conducted similar drills in other states. The most recent drill was Tuesday night in Albany, New York. In that exercise, officials were conducting a so-called terror drill.
