More information on a stolen explosives investigation that occurred a month ago. A federal agency is also involved in the investigation and did not issue any statement when the theft occurred. Now the Cass County Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone witnessing suspicious activity in the areas in and around the numerous mines in Cass County is encouraged to immediately contact the Cass County Sheriff's Office (402) 296-9370.
The Cassgram reports Cass County Sheriff Wm. C. Brueggemann advised that between August 11, 2011 (a Thursday) and August 12, 2011 (a Friday) officers responded to investigate a theft of explosives from rural Weeping Water. The explosives were to be used for local mining businesses. Investigators from Cass County and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are investigating physical evidence and leads developed at the crime scene.
Sheriff’s department call logs at the time showed the theft occurred at a location west of Weeping Water. (Cassgram was in contact with the sheriff’s department duty commander that week but the sheriff’s office said ATF authorities would not issue any public statements so as to not hamper leads the ATF and county sheriff’s department were investigating.)
In the report released Friday, “Officers expect results from some of the physical evidence in the upcoming weeks,” said Brueggemann. “The investigation is ongoing.”
The sheriff's office has had an officer deputized by the ATF since 2006. The Cass County Sheriff's Department has previously worked numerous federal cases in conjunction with the ATF, said the sheriff.
