An Omaha family woke up Sunday to an explosion and saw their neighbor's house engulfed in flames. The family thinks they know what sparked the fire.
“I had went to bed and as I was laying there we felt a shake,” said neighbor Christa Crawford. “The bed shook a little bit and I thought it was a car accident. Then my two sisters said oh, it's a fire, it's a fire across the street. We open up the windows and it's just all ablaze."
It was quite a scene for Crawford and her family to wake up to at 33rd and Ames. “It was just all ablaze in the front of the house and at one point the smoke was just so dark, that you knew if anyone was inside there that it would be detrimental." Luckily, no one was inside at the time.
As firefighters fought the massive fire they also dealt with electrical explosions. The homeowner eventually returned, finding all of her belongings up in smoke. “I think in the beginning when she first walked up on it, she was really taken aback,” said neighbor Doris Allen, Crawford’s sister.
Allen said she talked to the homeowner and believes someone may have set the fire. “It was too quick. I mean it was an instantaneous blow after we heard the explosion." Allen is thankful no one was injured, but knows it's going to be a tough road ahead for her neighbor.
Investigators said the explosion happened shortly after a fight between a man and a woman. The cause remains under investigation.
