Self-Defense, Or Cold-Blooded Murder? Tracey Richter Speaks Out

Tracey Richter is facing life behind bars for her role in a ten-year old murder. A jury found her guilty of killing her neighbor back in 2001.

The crime happened in Early, Iowa. Richter claims two intruders broke into her home. At one point, she says one of the intruders tried to strangle her with pantyhose.

Richter shot 20-year old Dustin Wehde nine times. He was a neighbor, but Richter still maintains she didn't know it was him at the time.

"When they told me it was Dustin, I just fell apart again." said Richter.

The prosecution argues Richter lured Wehde to her home and had him write in a notebook that her ex-husband hired him to kill her and her son. Then, she shot him nine times.

Richter never did take the stand in her own defense, but she did talk to us about the night of the crime.

"I was definitely defending my family. They couldn't deny there was a home invasion." said Richter.

Jurors disagreed. They found her guilty of murder.

"I really believed it was going to be not guilty. It took me weeks, literally weeks to start processing it." said Richter.

In court, the defense painted a picture of a mother trying to defend her three children. The kids were home at the time of the attack.

Prosecutors claim Wehde is just one in a string of men Richter manipulated, and she is a calculated killer.

"There's no manipulation. Both of my ex-husbands, they could not be manipulated at all. We had a very traditional marriages, where they were the boss, and I was the wife." said Richter.

Richter faces life in prison at her December 5th sentencing. She plans to appeal the guilty verdict.

"It's hard to enough to have accusations turn around to where you're no longer the victim. You're a monster." said Richter.
