Embattled Senator Talks About Re-Election Campaign

A Nebraska state senator seeking re-election is asking voters to look at her accomplishments, not her gambling issues.

Brenda Council held a news conference Sunday afternoon. With supporters behind her, she told reporters, “I am seeking re-election so that I can continue to work to create jobs, provide better job training, improve the quality of education, provide for safer neighborhoods and to promote healthier families.”

Council’s message Sunday focused on the positive, but she has dealt with a lot of negative lately. In September, Council pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges of public abuse after she used campaign funds at a Kansas casino.

At the press conference Council said, “We all make mistakes.” She said she still believes she is the best person for the job. “While I am addressing my personal issues and I am undertaking all of the steps that need to be taken, that does not in any way prevent me from continuing to serve and continue to serve in a capacity I have these many years.”

Council’s opponent, Ernie Chambers, disagrees. Chambers told Channel 6 News, “The most important issue in any election is who is going to represent a community and the character of the individuals who are running are the uppermost issues.”

Now it is up to the voters to decide in November.
