A group of volunteers is trying to drum up support for creating charter schools in Omaha.
The group went around knocking on doors Sunday to talk about a bill in the Unicameral. Volunteers focused their efforts on north and southeast Omaha, saying that's where these schools are needed most.
"There's schools that aren't performing very well and parents and children that are stuck in those schools should have another option,” said Katie Linehan of the Nebraska Alliance For Quality Education.
Legislative Bill 593 is up for a public hearing on Monday. Volunteers hope families who support charter schools will call their state senator.
Charter schools receive public funding, but have more flexibility than most public schools.
