A major effort is underway in north Omaha to encourage voter participation in this year's general election. The goal is to have a record turnout.
Several community organizations have announced plans for multiple events to encourage people to vote. It starts 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a voter summit at North High School.
September will be dedicated to registering voters in north Omaha. That will include a week dedicated to encouraging people to volunteering with whatever campaign they wish.
“Your vote is your voice and we need to make sure that people in our community understand that and that they will utilize that tool to move forward,” said Willie Barney, president of the Empowerment Network.
The organizations hope to plan more events leading up to the November election.
