Eastern U.S. Snow Could Cause Flight Delays Here

It could be tough times for travelers heading to the northeastern part of the country. A winter storm is dropping snow from southern Illinois to Maine. In some places, up to 12 inches of snow or more is expected.

Travelers going through Omaha are keeping their eye on cancellation boards and the possibility of flight delays. The boards are already lighting up with flight delays at Eppley Airfield, but travelers heading home during the holidays are not letting the threat of delays or cancellations ruin their plans.

Shaunquae McMurtry was on the first flight out of Chicago's Midway Airport Wednesday morning. The freshman Nebraska wrestler says travelers there were aware of potential issues. "A lot of people were showing up early just because they were expecting delays or just a lot of people trying to get in."

Armed with an iPad, Alex Hammett was prepared for any delays. He's heading back to South Carolina with his grandparents, Angie and Carol Orfanedes after visiting Omaha. They figure to skirt the south end of the snow storm back east.

"(I'm) not concerned," Angie Orfanedes said. "I have a lot of travel miles under my belt. Rain doesn't bother me. It's hurricanes, tornadoes, snowstorms."

Sara Jacobson and Bart Haney were heading in the other direction, to Los Angeles. The native Omahans arrived here the day after last week's storm. "Going back, we're not too worried about it," Sara said. "It seems pretty easy, so yeah, yeah. Today's been pretty easy."

Haney says connecting flights are more problematic. "Mostly missing flight crews, people jumping from flight to flight. So I think the weather is slowing down connecting crews."

And a tip for those who are traveling. Take something along to break up the monotony of sitting in an airport. Just in case.
