Drunk Driver Gets Prison For Death Of Two Girls

The man convicted of killing two young girls in a drunk driving crash is facing 20 years in prison. Christopher Phelps was sentenced on Tuesday.

Phelps pleaded no contest to two counts of motor vehicle homicide in June. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison in each count. Those sentences are to run concurrently.

In October 2012, Phelps got into an argument with his girlfriend, Chanelle Tory. Investigators said Torry told Phelps to drive her and her three daughters home, but Phelps lost control and rolled down an embankment at 87th and Quest Street in Northwest Omaha.

Two of her children, four-year-old Laela Torry-Tooley and five-year-old Mela Skye Torry, were ejected and pinned under the SUV. They died of their injuries. Chanelle suffered a broken back, seven broken ribs and injuries to her head. A third child, 17-month-old Brielle Torry, was not hurt.

At the time of the crash, Phelps' blood alcohol level was .16, which is twice the legal limit.

After the sentencing Tuesday, Chanelle told Channel 6 she still feels the devastation of losing her two girls every day.

“Hard. It's been very hard. Every day, I have to wake up, and I don't have them. They're not here. I don't get to hear them. I'm used to them coming in my room and waking me up," she said.

After everything her family has been through, she said, overall, she is happy with the judge's decision.

“Forty years honestly is not enough time to sit and think about what he's taken from me, but me and my daughter, their sister, will never get to grow up with them," she said.

With the sentencing over now, Chanelle will continue trying to move on.

She said she can, only because she knows her girls are safe now.

“The fact that I know they're OK. They're in a better place, and that I know they would want me to be happy," she said.

While investigators say it was Chanelle who asked Phelps to drive her and her girls home, she told Channel 6 that's not true.

She said that never happened.

She said it was his decision to start driving.
