Plea agreement just before trial was to begin. A 40-year-old Omaha man pled guilty to a Class III Felony. Two Class II Felony counts were dismissed. There is no agreement on sentencing.
The Cassgram reports Lamont Gilchrist was arrested April 20th by the Nebraska State Patrol after he mistakenly drove his pickup truck into the lanes of the weigh scales on I-80 in Cass County. The NSP scale operator said he went through the lanes at 20 to 30 mph (the speed for semi-trailer trucks is less than 5 mph) and did not stop at the red light at the scale office.
He was originally charged with driving under the influence-aggravated-5th offense, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and driving under suspension.
Potential jury members were in the courthouse when the agreement was reached and Gilchrist pled guilty to driving under suspension.
Gilchrist has been in custody since his arrest. He will be sentenced next month. A Class III Felony conviction carries a 1 to 20 year sentence, a $25,000 fine, or both.
