The driver who left the scene of a rollover crash and shooting south of Springfield, Nebraska spoke with Channel 6 News about what happened Sunday morning.
"Dove into a ditch, started flipping end on end about four times, then I got out of the car, tried to gather all my belongings.” Eighteen-year-old Tasmine Finch was on her way home to Omaha from a bonfire party in the Louisville area when she lost control of the car she was driving near Highway 50 and Buffalo Road just after 2:30 a.m.
Finch and her passenger were being helped by others who went to the party when a car slowed down and several shots were fired. "Someone got mad because we were like go, go, go, leave the scene, leave the scene, somebody started shooting.” No one was hit.
Scared and in shock after hearing gunshots, Finch and her friend left the car and left the scene. “My first instinct was for me to call my mom, not the police."
When Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department deputies arrived, they found a wrecked car with no plates or registration, airbags deployed and no people. So they thought the worst, that maybe the driver and passenger had been thrown from the vehicle.
“It was out in some high grass areas, so they brought out the rescue team and they brought out their infrared to locate any bodies that might have been ejected,” said Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Peggy Buchannon.
But Finch was at home when deputies finally caught up with her. They say she should have never left. “You should stay at the scene, you should immediately call 911,” said Sgt. Buchannon. “If you are unable, hopefully somebody is going to pass by, see it, they'll call us, so we can immediately get there.”
Deputies took Finch to the hospital where they discovered she had also been drinking. With a blood-alcohol level of .02, Finch was cited, something she isn't sure played a role in the crash. “So yeah, it could be because I had alcohol in my system. Do I feel it was? No."
Finch has a court date in July. She's been charged with DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
A shell casing from a semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. Deputies are investigating the shooting.
