A Gering, Nebraska teenager was killed Sunday morning when she tried to drive across the tracks in front of an oncoming train.
The 17-year-old girl, whose name has not been released, was driving south on 21st Avenue east of Gering when the accident happened around 1:30 a.m.
Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Department Lt. Rick Spencer says the girl drove around the crossing arms blocking the road at the railroad crossing. An eastbound train struck the passenger side of the girl's vehicle. She died later at Regional West Medical Center.
The crossing was closed until about 5 a.m. while the accident was cleaned up and investigated.
