Dozens gathered at Lake Manawa Sunday afternoon for a polar plunge that is benefiting a 5 month old boy fighting cancer. The boy is from a small town in Missouri, but his fight against the disease has gained world-wide attention.
Landon Shaw is currently inside a Kansas City hospital, fighting tumors in his kidneys and brain. His parents, Brandon and Alyssa, told WOWT 6 News it has been a difficult road. Problems began appearing around 1.5 months old. By 4 months old, doctors diagnosed Landon.
“The last couple days have been rough he's spiked a high fever which in cancer patients can be very life threatening,” said Alyssa Shaw.
Support for Landon has gone viral. More than 24,000 people have joined the Facebook group, Plunge For Landon. In it, people leave videos of themselves taking the plunge, and challenge others to do the same. The challenger donates money for each person who accepts. Close to $30,000 has been raised as of Sunday night.
“It’s keeping us going, and giving us hope ,and making us laugh at sad moments,” Alyssa explained.
Terra Asta went to high school with baby Landon's father, Brandon. She organized the plunge at Lake Manawa. “I can't believe in a short amount of time that it has gained that much attention. I watched a couple videos this morning form Afghanistan and Germany.
WOWT 6 News Anchor/Reporter Joe Chiodo also took part in the plunge and will be donating toward the cause.
One jumper is now challenging The Plattsmouth and Pacific Junction Fire Departments to Plunge For Landon. He said if the departments take part in the event, he will donate 40 more dollars.
One girl participating in the plunge told WOWT 6 News, “I hope he gets better, and really fast it has to be hard for that family, so good luck to everybody and have fun.”
