A downtown gas leak forced the evacuation of several businesses near 14th and Jones Tuesday afternoon.
The fire department and Metropolitan Utilities District crews were called out around 2 p.m.
Battalion Chief Dan Miller said a piece of construction equipment struck a two-inch plastic gas line outside of a building under construction.
Tommy Hughes works in the State Farm office nearby and he said there was a heavy odor of gas in the building. “In the offices - in the whole building. So, it's been pretty bad.”
It took crews 10 to 15 minutes to stop the leak and clear the buildings of any residual gas.
