Pilger Days will launch as scheduled Friday night in spite of the devastating storm that shattered the town a month ago.
The long rebuilding process continues but it continues with the help of a lot of people.
A mountain of relief donations has formed in Wisner. The Stalp Ready Mix building has a facility where the donations are being stored and it is packed. In addition, five full semis are waiting outside.
The donations are coming in from all across the country.
The Wisner/Pilger Ladies Fire Auxiliary is coordinating the donations and they want to say thank you for the help.
Volunteer Megan Hassler said, “Just a huge, huge thank you to everybody who donated. All of the volunteers that just literally showed up from all over the state, all over the country. There’s just no way, no way we could have made it work without people just showing up: ‘What do you want us to do? What needs to be done?’ Because we couldn’t have done it by ourselves by any means.”
Hassler says there is some order to the chaos. They have the room organized with supplies categorized.
Megan and about 10 other women sort through piles of donations from clothes, to food and hygiene items to create order. The donations came quickly.
"Instantaneous,” she said. “The tornadoes, I don't even think weren't even off the ground and people were already mobilizing, ‘What do we do? What do we need to be doing? Who needs help? What can we do?’ and it didn't stop. It hasn't stopped."
It started as a little sandwich project with these women. The plan was to make some food for the first responders the day the storms hit. Then came the tidal wave of generosity.
“It just got to be so much coming in so fast. It was, ‘Ok, where do we put it? How do we organize it?"
They hope to remain open through mid-August. While the donation site does not need any more clothing or food, anyone wishing to help can offer gift cards or money.
For those who still need help, the hours at the donation center are Monday – Friday from 1 p.m. To 7 p.m. And from 10 a.m. To 3 p.m. on Saturday.
