Dog Reunited With Owners After Four Years

A family pet who ran away four years ago is reunited with its owner in Malcolm, Nebraska.

"Oh, a lot of tears. I didn't sleep at night because I didn't know where he was or who had him," said Arlene Heverlone after she was reunited with her dog.

When Duke went astray four years ago and a witness saw a man in a truck haul him away, the Heverlone family thought Duke was gone for good.

Posters popped up around the area and rewards were offered. Larry Heverlone searched all of the surrounding towns with no luck.

Then the luck turned, four years later. The Kring family of Malcolm took Duke in when he wandered to them during the February 4th snow storm, matted, and exhausted. They had him for six days.

"During that six days we tried to find his owner, we were putting up posters everywhere," said Doneta Kring

Then they contacted the Humane Society. Bob Downey says a micro chip inserted in Duke when the Heverlone's adopted him nine years ago is the reason for the reunion. "I've seen examples of returning pets to the east coast that have ended up in Lincoln with a microchip but nothing that has been missing for four years. That's what is really amazing and powerful about this story and it underscores the value of a micro chip."

"I'm just glad he's back. Tears came yesterday when I was him. I walked in there and saw his face. I knew it was Duke," said Arlene.

He was truly a sight for sore eyes.
