Omaha swimming pools will be going to the dogs as some facilities close for the season. The Nebraska Humane Society has announced Doggie Dips will be held at three pools kept open late on their last days.

"We decided to see if these guys can swim. Take them out on a hot day. How has it been? It's been good, I think they are done," said Rachel Escritt and Eliza Lane, dog owners. Escritt and Lane brought out their three dogs to the Lee Valley Pool Sunday night.

Future Doggie Dips will be at Cryer Pool near Cryer Avenue and Arbor Street on Wednesday, August 6th from 6-7:30 p.m. and at Benson Gallagher Pool at North 52nd Street and Northwest Radial Highway on Sunday, August 10th from 5:30-7 p.m.

Cost is $5 for one dog and two handlers. Additional people are $1. Dogs should be brought in on leashes.

Keep in mind swimming comes naturally for many dogs, but not for all. Dogs are like kids. Even if they have a natural instinct to swim, not all dogs like to swim. As a general rule, sporting and working breeds are swimmers, but some breeds like bassets and pugs don't swim very well.

If your dog doesn't like to swim or has never swam before, respect that. Never toss a dog into the water. If you think he or she might like to swim, start slowly in shallow water and coax them in with toys or treats. Don't allow them to get deeper than they can handle. Realize that puppies may panic, so be ready to get their feet to solid ground.

Some dogs will follow the example of a doggy pal who loves to swim. Shallow pools like kiddie pools or even sprinklers can be an option for older dogs or breeds that don't swim well. Just remember that even with shallow water, always supervise your canine around water.

The Nebraska Humane Society at 8929 Fort Street in Omaha is open weekends from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekdays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can always look up animals and find information at nehumanesociety.org.
