Dodge Commute Woes

The Dodge Expressway has been helping people get to work on time for seven years now. But is the elevated expressway still serving Omaha drivers?

The expressway was built to alleviate traffic jams in the area of 114th and Dodge but the traffic jams have returned.

Five days a week Cristina Blankenship drives through the intersection of 114th and Dodge, and ten times a week it's a challenge to get to work and back without getting into an accident.

Cristina Blankenship says, "It's a nightmare some mornings. Trying to get onto Dodge and trying to get over to turn onto 114th, coming off that interstate with the overpass it's miserable."

Blankenship has come to dread the morning commutes to her job at Heartland Health Systems and the drive home is just as bad.

While there are backups at 114th and Dodge Cristina's real problem is with the traffic coming off Interstate 680 or from the elevated expressway.

Cristina Blankenship says, "It is pretty hectic trying to get on and get off. It's hard to get back and forth because you don't know where those cars are coming from the interstate or off Dodge Express so you have to navigate through traffic."

Blankenship says traffic goes from hectic to traffic jam in a moment.

Cristina Blankenship says, "Mainly down at 114th is where I've noticed most of it. Usually up here we don't see too much but get down there to 114th where you can either go to the interstate, 108th, all that chaos right there, that's too much chaos."

And Blankenship feels, too much traffic.

According to the Nebraska Department of Roads before the expressway was built the average daily traffic in the area of 114th was 68,570. In 2012 the average daily traffic on the expressway 82,955 cars and trucks.

The Nebraska Department of Roads constantly monitors traffic flow and number of vehicles using the Dodge Expressway. Even with the additional 14,000 cars and trucks the commute on the expressway is still quicker than the old Dodge route.
