The Iowa Board of Medicine has fined another doctor for a surgical error.
The board says Dr. Tuvi Mendel of Davenport mistakenly performed arthroscopic surgery on the patient's left ankle instead of the right ankle last November 5th. Dr. Mendel noticed the error after he finished and immediately told the patient and her family. The patient agreed to have surgery on her right ankle. Dr. Mendel reported the incident to the medical board.
The board issued a warning and fined Mendel $2,500, the same penalty handed down Wednesday to Dr. Rene Recinos of Mason City, who had operated on a patient's right ring finger instead of the patient's right middle finger. He has submitted to the board a plan that outlines what he'll do to avoid such errors in the future.
