A distracted driver is blamed for causing an accident near the Douglas-Washington County line northwest of Omaha Saturday afternoon.
Douglas County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Marty Bilek said 17-year-old Justin Mahon was driving a pickup northbound on Highway 133 around 4 p.m. when he reached down to change the radio station, not realizing vehicles ahead had slowed down because someone was making a left turn.
Once Mahon noticed the traffic, he swerved into the southbound lane and hit an oncoming pickup driven by 20-year-old Bailey Heaton of Chadron. She was taken by medical helicopter to Alegent Creighton University Medical Center in critical condition.
Mahon was hospitalized with less serious injuries.
