"Disaster" Victims Needed

Local “first responders” and the Omaha Airport Authority need the public’s help to conduct a disaster exercise on Saturday, October 13, 2012.

Specifically, they are looking for additional citizen volunteers to play the role of crash victims and their family members.

  1. All volunteers must be at the airport at 7:30 a.m. on October 13, 2012.
  2. Registration is on-line at www.volunteersolutions.org/omaha.
  3. Some volunteers will be “painted” with simulated injuries (referred to as “moulage” on the registration site). Others will be asked to play the role of victims’ family members. Please select the role you prefer when you register.
  4. While on the registration site, volunteers will be asked to authorize a waiver of liability and download a Volunteer Actor’s Handbook which will contain their instructions for the drill.
  5. Volunteers should wear old, comfortable, loose-fit clothing and easily removable shoes. Drill organizers recommend that jewelry not be worn and purses/backpacks and other personal items such as cell phones be left at home.
  6. Once the exercise begins on October 13th, volunteers are asked to remain in their roles until its conclusion at 3:30 p.m., barring a real-life personal emergency. Full participation ensures a productive drill.
  7. All participants will receive a Certificate of Appreciation during the check-out process.

The volunteers will play a key part in the preparedness of our community, and they’ll get a chance to see rescue personnel practice the skills and procedures needed to respond to a full-scale disaster.

Organizers say the drill is critical to keep the skills of our emergency workers and Medical Reserve Corps sharp, and to help local agencies work efficiently together in a time of crisis.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided and liquids will be available all day. Restrooms will be readily available.

All volunteers must be 19 years of age or older.
