Disabled Veteran's American Dream Becomes Nightmare

A disabled Army Veteran has the American dream turn into a nightmare. A remodeled home he bought is full of code violations. A squad of Omaha city inspectors go through the house after a call from Fact Finders.

Chief of Building permits and inspections Jay Davis said, "We have no permits on this house for any work at all."

Iraq war veteran Dmytro Smith paid $73,000 for the home he found out after closing had been flipped. Smith said, "Things that should have been done, weren't done. I would expect it would be fixed before they sold it."

The new shower leaks and water puddles in the garage. Along the way it passes and electrical junction box that's not closed. Davis said, "I plug into an outlet here and there's a chance I could get shocked because I'm standing in water."

A ground wire is not up to code and a fitting on the water heater also improperly installed. However without permits city inspectors can't tack who did the work. Davis said, "The best I can do would be go back and try to find the seller but we're not in position to do that."

Repairs fall on the homeowner, a veteran who did two tours of duty in Iraq before retiring with a disability. Smith said, "I can't afford that. I'm retired military on disability just trying to scrap by."
