Did Hail Damage My Roof?

How do you know if you need a new roof after the hail came through? We have some expert advice.

"I heard this noise and I knew immediately," Mary Venditte recalled after hearing the hail crash through not one, but two skylights at her home near 180th and Harrison. "It was the weirdest feeling to have hail inside your home."

She wanted to know if the damage went beyond that so she asked Hustad Companies to look at her roof.

"I've told everyone that if the skylight is completely smashed out -- I guarantee that your roof is damaged too," said Spencer Lombardo.

That's not encouraging news for homeowners considering hundreds of skylights in dozens of neighborhoods are broken.

"Almost every skylight that wasn't tempered glass was destroyed in that area," said Lombardo.

State Farm tells Channel Six News that this hail storm has already produced 1,200 claims for metro homes and 2,300 for autos.

Experts found a number of problem spots with Mary Venditte's roof. A worker circled the damage. Often if there are seven to ten of these -- an insurance company will total out the roof.

But the damage is hard to see from the ground. If it isn't fixed say the experts -- that spells trouble in a year or so -- and the whole roof, not just the shingles, could be in jeopardy.

"Ultimately it's up to the insurance adjuster to decide," said Lombardo, "But it's good to have a professional to meet with the adjuster on site just to make sure you have someone on your side."

Contractors say replacement skylights are already hard to find.
