Democrats, Republicans Spar Over Who's Driving Shutdown

The official campaign arm of House Democrats says Nebraska's Congressmen are responsible for pushing the partial government shutdown into a second week.

"[This] irresponsible shutdown costs taxpayers $300 million every day, hurts our economy and the hardworking families of Nebraska," says Emily Bittner of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The DCCC cites multiple votes that would fund specific government programs, including National Parks, Veterans Benefits, and a special assistance program for women, infants and children. In each case, all three of Nebraska's Congressmen voted in favor of the resolution.

The committee says those "piecemeal" funding efforts amount to a push against voting on a clean government funding resolution.

Local lawmakers don't see it the same way.

Sunday, Rep. Lee Terry told WOWT 6 News it doesn't look like there's any "ray of sunshine" that the partial government shutdown will be over soon. On his website, he urges constituents to support "rebooting America" by funding agencies the US "needs," and keeping the doors closed on the rest.

In a speech delivered Friday on Capitol Hill, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry said lawmakers need to drop the attacks, and start talking.

"Maybe we can reframe this whole discussion and agree to something - that we should keep working steadily to get this government back running, while also working on the right kind of policy reform, tax reform and spending reform," said Fortenberry.

On his official website, Rep. Adrian Smith says Republicans aren't the party that has refused to negotiate.

"Elections have consequences, and the American people elected divided government. With Democrats in control of the Senate and the White House, and Republicans in control of the House, no one should expect to get everything they want."
