A jury will resume deliberations Monday in Neligh, Nebraska in the double-murder trial of 33-year-old Matthew Hinrichsen, accused of killing a couple last year.
Hinrichsen is charged with two counts first-degree murder in the December 2012 deaths of his ex-girlfriend Victoria Lee and her husband, Alex Vargas. Their bodies were found in a charred trailer in rural Antelope County where the newlyweds were living. Prosecutors say Vargas died from three gunshot wounds and Lee died of blunt force trauma to her head.
During the trial, Hinrichsen's lawyers didn't dispute that he killed the couple, but they argued the killings weren't planned. So they say Hinrichsen should be convicted of manslaughter, not murder.
Last Thursday, Hinrichsen tearfully recounted the graphic details of the night of the murders. Earlier, his mother testified that Victoria was still living in the Hinrichsen home until late October, a week after she married Vargas. When Hinrichsen found out, he said he went to confront Alex to scare him. Hinrichsen said he didn't know Victoria was with Alex in the mobile home and he said most of that night is "blurry" in his memory.
