Deer Caused Weekend Crashes

Deer a factor in two weekend injury accidents.

The Cassgram reports the first one was at 11:37pm Saturday. Cass County sheriff's deputies, Plattsmouth EMS, Plattsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Plattsmouth police officers responded to the one-vehicle accident on Chicago Avenue near Horning Road.
Cass County Sheriff Wm. C. Brueggemann says a 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor driven by Bryan K. Cordner, 47, of Plattsmouth was southbound on Chicago Avenue when Cordner swerved to miss a deer in the roadway. The vehicle left the roadway and came to rest on the driver’s side in a drainage ditch.

A passenger in the vehicle, Erin E. Phillips, 30, of Omaha was transported to Alegent Creighton Medical Center with injuries sustained in the accident. Two other passengers were not injured.

The PVFD and Cass County Emergency Management Agency contained liquid that leaked from the vehicle’s engine compartment into the water in the drainage ditch.

All occupants were wearing seatbelts. Dense fog at the time may have contributed to cause of the accident.

---A car-deer collision occurred Sunday at 7:24pm. Sheriff’s deputies and Weeping Water Fire and Rescue responded to Nebraska Highway 50 north of Fletcher Avenue.

Brueggemann says a 1998 Ford Taurus driven by Abbas Hajmusa, 46, of Tecumseh was traveling south on Highway 50 when a deer entered the roadway and was struck by the Taurus. Both air bags deployed. Amel Mahoud, age 34, a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to Bryan West Hospital in Lincoln with minor injuries.
