Autopsy results have confirmed that a Burwell, Nebraska man shot his 2-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself.
Thirty-one-year-old Christopher Melling shot Aimee Melling, who would have celebrated her 3rd birthday on Sunday, in the head with a shotgun in their home before shooting himself in the head sometime between last Saturday night and Tuesday morning.
The bodies were discovered Tuesday afternoon after police gained entry into the home through a window in response to neighbors' concern that there had been no recent activity at the house and that lights had been left on.
The deaths followed a disturbance on January 3rd when Christopher's wife and Aimee's mother, 33-year-old Tammy Melling, was arrested on domestic assault charges. Christopher complained that his wife threatened him and hit him during an argument. Investigators do not consider Tammy a suspect in the deaths of her husband and daughter.
