Looking for a good deal? It turns out a good place to look is the Omaha Property Auction that the city holds once a month.

It was a packed house Saturday at the Omaha vehicle impound facility at 78th and F streets, but these people weren’t there for cars but for a property auction.

Everything from fishing poles to golf clubs and tools were being auctioned off. Some of the items are old city equipment, things found in impounded vehicles or even items found in drug raids.

The auction is held on the first Saturday of every month and Steve Mlynarek is a regular. “It’s a hunt, it’s a mystery and it’s like winning the lottery. I think I won the lottery today.” He says he came out big.

Mlynarek bought a bag of foreign coins for $135, but thinks it’s worth way more. "There's also a booklet that my son has. In the booklet, whoever owned these prior priced them all out and if I get half the value of what the price is in the book, I will probably get 10 times my money."

Ernie Miranda is also a regular. “I buy radios, gold chains, you name it, from shoes to automotive equipment and all that."

For Donald Harris, this was his first time. "I thought that I would come out and see what I can get." He went home happy with a TV for $90.

For many, the auction is all about the thrill or the deal. For the city, it’s about getting rid of items they don’t need, a win-win situation for both.

The auction is cash only. The money raised goes into the city’s general fund.
