Deaf Med Student Wins Lawsuit Appeal Against Creighton

A federal appeals court says a jury should be allowed to decide whether Creighton University discriminated against a deaf medical school student.

A three-judge panel of the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Tuesday said a lower federal court should not have dismissed Michael Argenyi's discrimination lawsuit.

Argenyi was accepted to Creighton's medical school after disclosing on his application that he was hearing-impaired. Argenyi requested certain accommodations for his disability to allow him to follow lectures and communicate with patients.

He sued in 2009 after his first year of medical school, saying Creighton did provide some assistance, but that it was inadequate. Argenyi says the university refused his requests for interpreters and a system that transcribes spoken words into text on a computer screen.
