The deadline to sign up for health insurance is Monday, March 31st. The deadline and the potential penalty for not having coverage is part of the Affordable Care Act that requires health insurance.
This reminder was sent out by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska in a release Tuesday. “The bottom line is you have less than a week until the deadline,” said Tom Gilsdorf, director, Product Development. “You won’t be able to sign up for insurance again until mid-November unless you have a life-changing event; lose insurance-at-work, get married, have a baby or get divorced.”
Depending on income, nearly 169,000 uninsured Nebraskans may be eligible for a tax credit when they purchase insurance. Nebraskans in the 18- to 29-year-old age group need to pay particular attention.
“They can’t just buy insurance if they get sick,” said Gilsdorf. “Parents of adult children without health insurance should be encouraging their children to sign up. It will give them both peace of mind.”
