A driver accused of leaving a child in a daycare van for hours is now in trouble with the law. It’s something the parents were hoping for, but the couple says it’s not enough.

It’s been a week since 4 year old Haylee Maxson was left alone on a daycare van, something her parents are still trying to come to grips with. “The whole thing with her being left frightens me, it still does,” said Monica Maxson.

A police report just released says Haylee was left in the Little Lambs daycare van for four hours. It also says Haylee was brought home later in the day, accompanied by a staff member, who then let the parents know what happened.

Now after an investigation the driver, Calethia Burton, has been cited for child neglect. “She deserved what she got,” said James Maxson.

Charges aren’t expected for anyone else with the daycare, but the parents wish more could have been done. “I think when you put a child in daycare it’s everyone’s responsibility to keep an eye on the child, no matter what. Honestly I feel like we trusted them, we put our trust in them.”

As we reported last week this isn’t the first time a Little Lambs employee has left a child in a vehicle for hours alone. Another mother tells us back in 2010 it happened to her child. Now the Maxson’s hope the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services will look further into this. “I sure as heck hope they are investigating further or maybe even possibly taking their daycare license away.”

For now the family is looking for a new place for Haylee to go to, but it’s been tough for them to learn to trust anyone else.

Channel 6 has contacted NHHS to ask whether they are investigating this further or whether any action will be taken. We will let you know what they say. We did talk to the driver who said she did not have any comment.
