Day Care Provider Charged With Child Abuse Out On Bond

An Omaha day care provider has been arrested and charged for allegedly shaking a 9-month-old girl.

Thirty-three-year-old Jennifer Story posted 10 percent of her $100,000 bond Thursday and walked out of the Douglas County Jail. She had been booked for child abuse with intent to commit serious bodily injury, which is a felony. If convicted she would face one to 50 years in prison.

According to police reports, Story called 911 on April 19th to report Sofie Caniglia was ill. Story allegedly told officers that Caniglia vomited and showed signs of having a seizure, however, medical professionals later determined that the girl suffered a subdural hematoma from being vigorously shaken. Police reported at the time, Story was caring for several noisy children at the day care she runs in her home.

Her lawyer, Ben Maxell, says she didn’t do it. “Miss Story sends her deepest sympathies and prayers to the Canigila family, but does steadfast maintains her innocence and that no actions on her part caused these injuries to the baby."

Sofie remains at Children's Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition.

Story is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on May 17th. While Story is free on bond she is to have no contact with children under 18 other than her own.
