A teenage girl took the stand in court today and accused a former middle school teacher of looking at her personal cell phone pictures and making lewd comments.
Shad Knutson is on trial in Douglas County District Court for seven felony counts of sexual assault and abuse of four former female students from 2009 and 2010 while a social studies teacher at Nathan Hale Middle School in Omaha.
Another one of his accusers took the stand today and said that, more than once, after taking her cell phone away from her because she was using it to text in class, Knutson looked through her cell phone pictures. She said one of those times during class he called her up to his desk, pointed at her breasts in one of the pictures on the phone and said "I like these."
She also testified that the next day she had to stay after school to take a standardized test that she had missed. And after asking Knutson for help on the test, he told her he couldn't help her. But then he showed her a Post-It note that said on it "A picture of you will get you a 'b'."
But during cross examination, the now 17-year-old girl admitted she did have some discipline problems and had been suspended from school during that school year.
The defense also pointed out that the girl did not include all of her accusations against Knutson in a school incident report.
The girl's mother took the stand next and explained that when she came to the school that day, she could tell her daughter was visibly upset. She said, "You just know when something's wrong with your children."
The trial will continue and Monday in Judge Dougherty's courtroom.
