Online holiday sales had already hit the billion dollar mark by Sunday. And on Cyber Monday alone, they're expected to hit $1.5 billion, a 20-percent increase over last year.
The National Retail Federation is reporting that combined spending in stores and online over the four-day weekend rose 13-percent. On the average, shoppers spent $423, which is a 6-percent climb over last year.
Jeff Douglas, the E-Commerce Manager at Nebraska Furniture Mart said internet sales will make up a decent-sized chunk of their business. "Cyber Monday has gotten to be a bigger deal every year," he said. "And this year, research shows that 10-percent of holiday sales will happen in the online channel. so at Nebraska furniture mart we've taken a lot of steps to improve our website."
Douglas said they're trying to make shopping as convenient as possible for customers. That includes giving online customers the option of picking up merchandise at the store, via drive-through service. "We can get those customers through in about ten-minutes or less," he said.
Competition has spurred more and more retailers to offer deeper discounts and free shipping. Experts say the better deals can be found when doing a search for specific merchandise, rather than a broader aimless search of Cyber Monday deals.
As for security, consumers are advised to change passwords with each site where they shop, using a combination of letters and numbers. Avoid using words such as "cheap" or "discount" when searching for an item. Those descriptors are more likely to lead to a scammer's website.
