Update: Crime Spree Ends On Soccer Field

Authorities say 21-year-old Andrew Baker of Bellevue led officers on a pursuit starting at 120th and Eagle Run, but he was able to elude police. Then 911 received a number of calls about a vehicle with two flat tires driving erratically.

Officers were able to catch up to Baker after he drove the stolen vehicle across a field at the Discovery Soccer Complex at 136th and Q streets. Baker then ran off. The soccer fields were empty by that time.

Tom Hurley was at the complex just an hour-and-a-half earlier for his grandson's game. He said the fields were full of adults and children.

"It could've been real scary because with the car where it was at and with the situation of him being a felon and all the kids being there, it could've been utter chaos. So we're really lucky."

As Baker fled and tried to cross a nearby creek, police were quickly able to cut him off. "We went by the creek and all of them just came rushing out with their rifles and stuff," said witness Siena Gleason.

Authorities took Baker into custody and recovered weapons from the stolen Chevy Impala. They said no one was hurt.

"When you have somebody who was as brazen as what this individual appears to be, to be driving in this manner at noon on a Saturday with a lot of traffic out, it definitely endangers a lot of people," said Omaha Police Lt. Michael McGee. "So we want to get this person in custody."

The investigation revealed that Baker was involved with other crimes. Police believe he held up a Subway restaurant at 50th and L with a shotgun earlier in the morning and used the gun to break the window of a woman's car at 117th and Dodge before taking her purse. It was initially thought Baker fired at the vehicle. The woman is deaf, which may have contributed to the confusion about shots being fired. She was not hurt.

"We're still investigating and tying everything together to see how many cases we can actually clear up," said Lt. McGee.

Baker was booked for attempted robbery, use of a weapon to commit a felony (Subway) and robbery, use of a firearm to commit a felony, theft by receiving, felony flight to avoid arrest, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a short shotgun (two counts) and possession of a stolen firearm (five counts).
