Update: Authorities Identify Suspect Killed in Crash

Authorities have identified the suspect killed in a pursuit on Wednesday as 52-year-old Bruce Coenen of Harlan, Iowa.

Investigators say he led them on a chase south of Harlan and died when his vehicle crashed into a one driven by I-DOT workers.

The incident happened about 12:30 p.m. along Highway 59 north of the Interstate 80 Avoca exit.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the officers were assisting in a pursuit and had just made a U-turn to provide a rolling roadblock when their vehicle was hit from behind by the suspect's. Coenen's vehicle caught fire and he was killed.

The two I-DOT officers who suffered non-life threatening injuries are identified as 58-year-old Kent Leibe of Carter Laker and 40-year-old Brian Rink of Griswold.

All lanes of Highway 59 between Interstate-80 and Highway 83 were re-opened several hours after the incident. The ISP said multiple cars and agencies were involved in the pursuit.
