We often hear of robberies that stem from Craigslist ads, but one man who fell victim told WOWT 6 News he was taken advantage of moments after another man was robbed.
Eric Theis said he was supposed to trade a pair of ‘Beats’ headphones for an iPhone 5. He has the texts to prove the deal, but when he arrived at the home of seller James Millton, he realized it was too good to be true. “As soon as I saw him I had a suspicion that it wasn't going to end up as planned."
Milton allegedly grabbed the headphones and ran, but Eric didn't feel safe going after him. “If I went around the corner there probably would have been two guys and one of them would have had a gun.”
Eric spotted police across the street and alerted them of the crime. It turned out they were there looking for Milton for allegedly pulling the same stunt on another man moments earlier. In that instance, he allegedly drew a gun.
“Oh my gosh, I was shocked, I couldn't believe it. I had my 18-month-old son in the car and as soon as I heard they had used a gun on some other people I was terrified, absolutely terrified."
Police caught Milton and searched his home, reportedly finding two pairs of headphones, one of which was Eric’s. They also found three iPhones, an AT&T phone, a BB gun, marijuana and a scale.
Police suggest scheduling Craigslist meet-ups in a safe, public place. They recommend in front of a police station during the day.
