Cracking Down On Repeat Drunk Drivers

How can police get repeat drunk drivers off the road? They figure out where they live or work and take them to jail. Channel 6 News rode along with Sarpy County Sheriff's Department deputies on Wednesday to see how they're cracking down.

Deputies Tom Riley and Greg Monico were checking addresses in Omaha for repeat drunk drivers with outstanding warrants. First on the on the list was a home in south Omaha where a man raking leaves in his yard was about to go for a ride. He went willingly, facing charges of DUI, driving under suspension and not having proof of insurance.

This is part of an effort by the Sarpy County Sheriff's Department to crack down on drunk driving by bringing in repeat offenders. “Whether it be first offense, second offense, third offense or somebody who hasn't paid their fines or followed a court order, those people, for the most part, may continue to be out there and drive,” says Sarpy County Sheriff Jeff Davis. “They are very dangerous. It doesn't matter if it's a misdemeanor warrant or not.

The sheriff has released a list of more than 100 people with outstanding warrants and wants the public's help in finding them. They won't all be this easy. Sometimes it takes a lot of work to find these people. “About the same amount of leg work is involved in those warrants as in a serious felony, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's not worth it,” says Sheriff Davis. “I would say certainly it's worth it.”

An apartment near 120th and L was the last known address for another person on the list, but someone else lives there now, so deputies will have to keep looking. But one by one, deputies hope to get repeat offenders off the street.

Since announcing the list of more than 100 names of those with outstanding warrants, Sheriff Davis says his department has cleared several dozen cases.
