A couple went on a shopping spree, but it turns out they didn’t have the funds to pay. Now they’re facing criminal charges.

Inside the Nebraska Furniture Mart loss prevention experts are able to keep a close eye on things with cameras throughout the store. At first they didn’t think anything out of the ordinary of one couple. They checked out several times, often with a child, and paid using checks.

It turns out though they weren’t exactly ideal customers though. The checks they were using were no good. “They were driven. They were in here quite a few times. They knew what they were doing and it was intentional,” said Loss Prevention Manager Jim Cahill.

The couple, Randy and Eugena Hasbrouck of Lincoln, bought 66 different items over a three day span in February, everything from furniture, gift cards, electronics and house wares. The checks totaled more than $6,000.

“As these checks get processed, we have to go through a civil process just to make sure that check wasn’t overdrawn,” said Cahill. When the checks didn’t go through, fraud prevention took over and Omaha police were contacted.

The checks were written from three different accounts, all in the couple’s names and all had been closed. Cahill says they plan on making sure they get their payment.

“Unlike many retailers we're not going to write it off, so if you want to come here and steal, two things you need to know, you're going to get caught and we're coming after you and we're going to recover as much of that stolen merchandise as we can.”

Cahill says they recovered about $4,000 worth of merchandise at the couple’s home and they plan to seek restitution for the rest in court.

The Hasbrouck’s have both been charged with theft by deception.
