A 1-year-old boy lies in a hospital bed where he is being treated for serious injuries including internal bleeding in two areas of the brain, a skull fracture, and a buckle fracture on his left arm which was already healing.

The Lancaster County sheriff says the boy is the victim of severe child abuse.

The boy’s mother, 22-year-old Kayla Jurgensen, says the child was being cared for by her boyfriend, 25-year-old Matthew Wylie. Jurgensen took her son to Crete Hospital on Wednesday after she says Wylie reported the injuries to her while she was at work. The boy was then flown to the trauma unit at Bryan/LGH West in Lincoln.

The sheriff arrested Wylie for felony child abuse. Jurgensen was cited and released for child abuse. The boy has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

Wylie had been on parole for 2nd degree assault & child abuse stemming from an incident in 2009 at the same location, the couple’s home in Martell, Nebraska. In that incident a three-month-old boy suffered a laceration to his tongue that required surgery.

Wylie was sentenced in 2010 to serve 3-6 years for assault and 2-5 years for child abuse. He was paroled in October 2011 and was ordered not to have any contact with children younger than 12. His discharge date would have been December 26 of this year.

In August of this year, Lancaster County deputies received information that Jurgensen and her baby were living with Wylie. An investigation did not determine the child was being abused but the deputies were aware that Wylie’s parole officer had visited the home earlier that day after being notified of the living arrangements with an infant in the house.

The sheriff is investigating whether the no contact provision for children younger than 12 was in place prior to the August investigation. The victims are not Wylie’s biological children.
