Channel 6 News has learned that the Internal Revenue Service has filed three liens against Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray and his wife, Omaha Public School Board President Freddie Gray, for non-payment of taxes.
Documents obtained from the Douglas County Register of Deeds by Channel 6 show the couple has outstanding back taxes dating from 1996 through 2011 in the total amount of $60,366.08.
Councilman Gray told Channel 6 News Thursday "it takes a little time to work your way out of it" and that "we'll do what we have to do" to get the issue resolved. He said they have paid back some of the debt and currently owe just under $50,000.
Documents also show the Grays had two previous liens filed by the IRS in the total amount of $15,702.85 and three additional previous liens filed by the state against them for a total of $3,801.50. Councilman Gray said those liens have been paid off.
