There have been a dozen drawings since a winning Powerball ticket was sold. Wednesday night’s advertised jackpot is $250 million, 14th largest in history.
Those with high hopes of winning could find themselves in trouble if they win and aren't prepared for the life-changing event. You could take a trip to get out of the cold, buy a mansion and quit your job. It's a big number that could mean fulfilling some of your biggest dreams.
Just ask anyone with a ticket. “I'll probably buy me a big Cadillac and a Bentley and I'll for sure get a nice house, somewhere out west,” said Kirt Williams.
What do you think you'd do with $250 million? “First college, pay off everything and set some aside and then go on a shopping spree,” said Abby Heaverlow.
Winning could also mean big problems if you're not ready. You'd have 60 days to decide to take the winnings in a lump sum or over 30 years. Attorney Steve Seline once represented a jackpot winner.
"You need to have somebody that's on your side to sit there and advise you as you go through the process, a good financial planner, a good accountant and a good lawyer."
If you take the lump sum you'd end up with $156 million, but Seline says about 41 percent in taxes later, you’d be left with a paltry $92 million. Also be prepared to have everyone you’ve ever met suddenly want to be your best friend.
