Costumes On The Cheap

Many families are looking to save money wherever they can, and they're turning to second-hand stores like Goodwill for Halloween costume inspiration.

"It's our busiest time of the year," said Kris Pachunka of Goodwill Industries, Inc. "It's our Christmas."

The non-profit's thrift store at 144th and Old "L" is loaded with costumes, more than four racks' worth. Mother of three, Kelly Roberts, was among those on the hunt, with affordability being key.

"If it's something they're going to grow out of quickly or something they're going to wear once," she said, "then, yeah, the price is right."

She added, "They also have a better selection (at Goodwill) than most Walmarts or local stores."

Among the racks, customers may stumble across some unique hand-made items, as well. We spotted a pink fairy princess outfit unlike anything traditional retailers carry, priced at $7.99, and also a Wizard of Oz Dorothy costume for a pre-schooler, priced at $5.99.

For boys, there are plenty of superhero costumes ranging from Batman to Spiderman, priced around $5.99. And a cowboy sheriff's costume was listed at the same price, complete with mock cow-hide chaps. It was just missing a hat, but among the available accessories, a $2.99 cowboy hat adds just the right touch.

By shopping Goodwill, it's more than the customers who benefit, said Pachunka. "It's helping our training programs for people with disabilities and disadvantages."

Goodwill Omaha's Facebook page also has a contest going for the best costume put together off their racks. People can upload pictures of the costumes through November 2nd. The public can vote on the finalists, and the winners, announced November 7th, will receive Goodwill gift certificates up to $100.
