Cookie Shop Closed By Fumes Reopens

What should have been the busiest day of the year for an Omaha business turned out to be the worst when paint fumes from a neighboring business ruined their Valentine’s Day cookies. Cookies By Design reopened Friday.

Owner Roger Strum says the health department gave the shop at 132nd and West Center Road a clean bill of health Thursday and even sampled the cookies.

The store had to close because a neighbor painted on Sunday and the fumes permeated his business. Strum said it cost his business $10,000 and insurance won't cover it. “There's a pollution exclusion on our policy so insurance is not going to cover it at all.”

Strum said most of his customers were not upset. “Ninety-eight percent of the people were really understanding. They either wanted a refund or wanted it resent next week. They were really sympathetic and understanding, so it has been really great.”

Strum wants to make it clear the neighboring business that painted was not Bliss, the salon next door.
