More information has been released about the plans for a Hy-Vee store south of Plattsmouth Keno.
After a few general questions about the store, the council quickly went through the process of approving an ordinance that vacates a portion of Westside Drive between the proposed store and its parking lot.
The Cassgram reports Pete Hosch, a real estate manager for the West Des Moines, Iowa based company, said the street vacation will allow Hy-Vee to reposition the traffic flow. Hy Vee will be responsible for maintenance of that portion of the repositioned road open to public travel.
Locating in smaller but growing communities around metro areas where the Hy-Vee name is already known is a new direction for the company. Hy Vee recently bought and remodeled an existing 32,000 square foot grocery store in Sheldon, IA, near Sioux Falls, SD.
In response to questions from council members, Hosch said the Plattsmouth store will be Hy-Vee’s first newly built store with this “different format.” The difference is mainly the size—the Plattsmouth store is to be 45,000 square feet; most people are familiar with Hy-Vee stores of about 85,000 square feet in this area. He said there will be less general merchandise product in smaller stores.
The site here along Highway 75 “really made sense” for this type of store, said Hosch.
The volume of sales will eventually determine the number of employees but Hosch said projections are for the total number of employees to be about 100 with about 25 of those being fulltime. The fulltime positions will mainly be the store managers and those in charge of the various departments such as the kitchen, meat, pharmacy, etc., he said.
If the purchase agreement is finalized, Hosch said it would probably be November of this year for the start of construction with the store to be open by November of 2013. Construction progress on other stores may affect the Plattsmouth schedule, he said.
